Tournament Chairman’s Message

I would personally like to thank all those who supported the Oak Bay Marine Group Juan De Fuca Fishing Tournament for the first time in 2017 and also to those who have supported us for the past 4 events. This includes all ticket buyers and all of our generous tournament sponsors. Without you this important fund raising event would not be possible. The organizers have now picked the 2018 tournament dates of Saturday August 11th and Sunday 12th. Let’s hope that we get more typical August weather and water conditions on the tournament weekend for 2018.  Our 2017 tournament weekend weather was a bit nautical at times and some of the smaller boats had a challenging weekend getting to their favored spots. Overall everyone had a fun weekend and lots of fish made it into the weigh scale. This included the $20,000.00 1st place winner – a 30.5 pound Chinook caught by Shawn Davies at Otter Point on Saturday afternoon during an active bite period. In dramatic fashion Shawn waited while others weighed their catches and was the last fish put up onto the scale on Saturday afternoon. Shawn was fishing with SVIAC board member Christopher Miller on Chris’s boat.

The 2017 event raised a total of $18,500.00 for the Sooke Chinook Sea Pen Project.   The organizers continue to work toward a complete sell out of our 500 tickets so that we can reach our goal of raising $40,000.00 each year for the project. We estimate that amount would represent about 50% of the total budget for this project in 2018. In the past 4 years this tournament has raised and directed a total of $67,000.00 towards the Sooke Chinook Sea Pen Project. In May of 2018 we will release 500,000 Chinook into Sooke Harbour. By 2020 and each year after we hope to be releasing 2 million Chinook!

The organizers hope all current participants will encourage their fishing friends to support ours efforts by buying a tournament ticket in 2018.

In 2017 we dropped the requirement of holding a current SVIAC annual membership to get a tournament ticket for the member price of $150.00 per rod ticket. All tickets in 2017 were $150.00 and that will be the case in 2018. The South Vancouver Island Anglers Coalition has a goal for a minimum of 2000 paid up members which would represent $80,0000.00 in dues. Reaching this target would allow SVIAC to lobby effectively on your behalf with more funds and greater standing. SVIAC currently sends a Canadian delegate to the annual International Pacific Halibut Commission meetings and provides funding travel expenses to numerous important in-person meetings away from Victoria. Additional funds from an increased membership base would permit SVIAC to represent your interests at more important meetings and fisheries consultations. This is even more imperative today with the federal government’s emerging Southern Resident Killer Whale recovery action plans. Your salmon fisheries need a strong rational voice at many more decision making tables.

I encourage anyone who enjoys the fisheries here on South Vancouver Island to continue to support those who are dedicated to working tirelessly on your behalf. Please re-new or purchase a South Vancouver Island Anglers Coalition membership today!

Once again thank you to all for your support for making the Oak Bay Marine Group Juan De Fuca Fishing Tournament the premier fishing tournament on Vancouver Island. Tight lines and remember to fish often but only keep what you need!
