Welcome to the Juan de Fuca Fishing Tournament website.
This is the South Island’s premier fishing event. Keep checking back for updated prizes, jackpot amounts, and new sponsor information.
The 2017 event will take place on
Saturday and Sunday, August 12 and 13
Thank you for your continued interest in this event. So what’s new this year you ask? Here’s a list of some of the improvements: A huge top cash prize for the largest salmon – your fish could be worth up to a whopping $25,000 in cash and prizes. Our new August tournament dates eliminates any concerns with fishing restrictions and allows each ticket holder to enter 2 Chinook salmon per day (wild or hatchery) and 1 halibut per day at the weigh scale. With each Chinook or halibut entered the ticket holder will receive a draw ticket which gives that person a chance at any of the fish draw prizes.
- We anticipate our total prize pool to exceed $100,000 in value
- The awards banquet will be held on Sunday 13th August at 3:00 p.m. at the Songhees First Nation Wellness Centre, 1100 Admirals Rd., Victoria, BC
- There will be prizes awarded for the top 10 largest salmon weighed in
- Those weighing in fish will be eligible for special draw prizes
- Additional draw prizes will be available for entrants with no fish weighed in
Heaviest Chinook overall wins $20,000. There is also a major prize awarded to the participant who registers the largest hatchery Chinook. That prize for 2017 is to be announced soon. If the heaviest Chinook overall is a hatchery fish the winner takes both the $20,000 cash and the major prize.
Each year we offer all participants the opportunity to buy tickets into our ‘Winner-take-all’ Team Jackpots. There are four Team Jackpots available and you can enter as many as you wish. The jackpot tickets offered are $100, $250, ad $500. When you buy a ticket in any of the jackpots and if you register the heaviest Chinook within the group of participants entered in that jackpot(s) your team wins 100% of the funds held in that jackpot(s). In the event of a tie in any of the jackpots, the first fish registered at the scale will win that jackpot(s). You are required to give us the names of those individual participants who are included in your team at the time of ticket purchase.
Team Jackpot tickets will be sold during the required attendance of the tournament registration nights held in local pubs. Out of town participants may purchase their tickets by contacting the tournament organizers directly and making arrangements for payment and ticket delivery or pick up.
The 2017 Team Jackpot tickets will be available to all tournament participants during the 2017 registration nights. Registration is open from 5 PM to 9 PM each night. Only cash or cheques accepted as payment for these tickets.
In 2016, the team jackpot amounts were:
- $100 – $6,100
- $250 – $1,750
- $500 – $500
Our Accumulator Jackpot is an exact weight ‘winner-take-all’ jackpot that grows each year until it is won. When all general tournament tickets go on sale we will announce a 5-pound spread into which the winning exact weight will fall. Each year that the Accumulator Jackpot is not won that 5-pound spread will drop by 5 pounds. As an example: in 2014 we announced that the exact weight would be between 30 and 35 pounds. The jackpot was not won and the funds were carried over to 2015. In 2015 we announced the winning weight would fall between 25 and 30 pounds. Again, the jackpot was not won and the jackpot funds have been carried over to 2016 and the winning weight will be a fish between 20 and 25 pounds. The Accumulator Jackpot will continue to grow and each year and the required weight of the winning fish will drop until the pot is won. For the 2016 Tournament, the winning weight was 21.6 lbs.
The exact weight is picked by the organizers prior to the tournament and is announced here online on the Friday evening the day before tournament fishing begins. This is a ‘winner-take-all’ jackpot with the tournament retaining none of the proceeds. Cost to enter is $20.00 per person, per year. Those who have not entered each year of the existing jackpot must ante up for the years they have missed.
Example: A new first time Accumulator ticket buyer with an existing pot that has not been won and has been building for 3 years will be required to pay $60 to enter. That is $20 for each year the existing jackpot has been building. In this way, every jackpot entrant will have the same amount invested in the eventual winning jackpot.
As the accumulator jackpot was won at the 2016 tournament, we’re starting anew! You can enter the Accumulator Jackpot at our booth in the Victoria Boat Show and on each on the tournament pub registration nights. South Vancouver Island Anglers Coalition will once again seed the new jackpot with $1,000.00 to ensure a potential first-year winner takes home a decent pot of cash.
In the event of a tie, the jackpot will be split evenly between all those with fish entered at the exact winning weight.
